Logo and site title

The two are alternatives

Most themes put a logo image next to the site title. Rural Blog swaps one for the other: upload a logo and the text title disappears; remove the logo and the text title comes back. There is never both.

That is why the logo has its own height control and the text title has its own typography and colour controls — they are two ways of doing the same job, and each is tuned separately.

Do nothing. The site name from Settings → General is printed in the header, in your heading font, uppercase, at 1.2em.

To change any of that, see Text logo size and colours. To change the name itself, edit Site Title in the same Customizer section — it is the same field as Settings → General.

  1. Site Identity → Logo → Select logo.
  2. Pick or upload the image. WordPress offers to crop to 400 × 200; Skip cropping is usually right, since the theme scales by height and lets the width follow.
  3. Set Image logo height — in pixels, 10 to 400, default 44.

Leave the height box empty and the image is drawn at its own height, which is rarely what you want from a file that might be 600px tall.

What size file to upload

Upload at roughly twice the height you will display, so it stays sharp on a high-density screen. For the default 44px logo, an image around 88–100px tall is right. Transparent PNG or SVG-exported-to-PNG for a logo with detail; a plain wordmark can be either.

Keep the logo shorter than the header. The bar is 60px out of the box, and a 44px logo sits comfortably inside it. If you want a taller logo, raise the header height to match rather than letting the logo push the bar around.

The logo image is printed as-is; the theme cannot recolour it. If you set the header skin to Dark, upload a light version of the logo.

A text logo has no such problem — it follows the header text colour automatically, and can be given a colour of its own.

The heading question

On the blog front page the site title is the page’s <h1>. Everywhere else it is a paragraph, because the <h1> belongs to the post or page you are reading. This happens automatically and applies to the image logo too (its alt text carries the site name).
