Social icons in the header

Appearance → Customize → Header → Display the social links. On by default.

There is no list of social profiles to fill in. The icons are a menu: you create a menu of Custom Links, assign it to the Social menu location, and the theme detects each network from its URL and swaps in the right icon.

That is set up on its own page — Social menu — including the full list of networks that get an icon.

What this switch covers

One toggle, two places: the header bar and the mobile menu.

The bar hides below the tablet breakpoint, and the off-canvas panel is where those icons go once it does. They are the same icons in the same role, so switching them off in the header and leaving them in the panel would read as a bug.

The footer copy is separate and has its own switch. You can therefore have social links in the footer only, which is a common and tidy arrangement: the header stays clean and the links are where a reader lands when they finish a post.

Turning this off does not unassign the menu. The Social menu location keeps its menu, and the footer copy keeps rendering unless you switch that off too.

Where they sit in the bar

Social icons are the first item in the header’s action group — social, then the search icon, then the button — and the group moves as a unit depending on the header layout.

On the Nav below layout the social icons go to the left of the logo while search and the button stay on the right, which balances an otherwise right-heavy row.

Styling

The icons take the header text colour, so they follow your skin automatically. There is no separate picker for them, deliberately: a row of icons in a colour of their own reads as a widget dropped into the bar rather than as part of it.
