Footer menu

Appearance → Menus → Menu Settings → Footer menu.

A shallow, single-row list of links shown in the footer, next to or under the copyright depending on the footer layout.

Creating it

1. Appearance → Menus → Create a new menu, name it Footer.
2. Add the pages you want.
3. Tick Footer menu under Menu Settings, and save.

You can assign the same menu to more than one location, but for the footer that is rarely right — the footer menu is for the pages your header menu deliberately does not carry.

What belongs in it

The obligations and the small print:

• Contact · About
• Colophon · Archives (the page template makes a good one)
• RSS · Newsletter

Anything you want reachable from every page but that would dilute the main menu.

Depth

One level. The footer menu is rendered at depth 1 — sub-items you add are not printed. That is the right shape for a single row; a dropdown in a footer has nowhere to drop to.

Layout

Where the menu sits depends on Customize → Footer → Footer layout:

• Stacked — copyright, then menu and social links, all centred in a column.
• Inline — copyright on the left half, the menu and the social links together on the right. On small screens it folds back to the stacked column.

If both the footer menu and the social links are absent, the wrapper that holds them is not printed at all, so the footer closes up rather than leaving a gap.

Styling

The footer menu takes the footer’s own text colour, from the footer skin or the pickers under it, and reads at a size close to the rest of the footer. The current page is highlighted here as it is in the header.
